Should You Buy Or Build A Yard Storage Shed

Making the determination to get a new yard storage shed is a big one that should not be taken lightly. When you’re ready to get a new shed you have two directions you can take. Either to build the shed yourself, or to purchase a prebuilt shed from one of the bigger manufacturers on the market. Of course you could go a totally different route and get stackable storage cubes, but we aren’t going to talk about that here! There are pros and cons to each decision that you’ll want to take a look at.

Building Your Own Yard Storage Shed

Pros – One of the biggest reasons you should consider building your own yard storage shed is because of the level of customizations you can perform on it. The design that you come up with is completely determined by your need for the shed, and you can even match it to fit your house perfectly.

Cons – One of the biggest downsides to building your own shed is the fact that you are going to need to know your way around some carpentry skills, and have the tools necessary to be able to complete the job. If you don’t have the tools or the skills you could run into quite a few problems down the line.

Buying A Prebuilt Yard Storage Shed

Pros – Buying a prebuilt yard shed gives you the option of buying something that is premanufactured and can be installed very quickly. Most of these sheds are plastic or metal and require very few hand tools to be able to complete the job. If you are able to read some basic directions you can typically install one of these sheds within a day or two over the weekend.

Cons – As we stated earlier, when you compare buying a shed to building one, you have a big downfall in being able to choose exactly what you need for the shed. From the choice of windows, to the types of cabinets, rafters, and other options that are available, you may not be able to find what you need with a prebuilt shed. While you may be able to find a few models that have some options you’re looking for, finding the perfect shed may be difficult when you’re considering mass manufactured prebuilt models.
